In Western Australia there are disconformities or low-angle unconformities between Lower Permian and Lower Carboniferous rocks in the Carnarvon and Canning Basins, and there are minor angular unconformities, disconformities, and onlaps within the Lower Carboniferous sequence around the margins of the Bonaparte Gulf Basin (Veevers et al., c). The continental shelf in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and Timor Sea is the widest in Australia, extending up to kilometres from the shore. Most of the inner shelf is characterised by relatively flat expanses of soft sediment seabed with localised rocky outcrops, gravel deposits and sand banks.
New information from a deep offshore well at Ashmore Reef and from offshore seismic reflection surveys in the Timor Sea shows a total composite thickness of ab ft. (15, m) of Phanerozoic sediments in the Bonaparte Gulf Basin.
